Connect AskGenealogy

It takes 2 minutes. You need Claude or ChatGPT and an email address. There is no password.

1. Add the connector

Choose the assistant you use.

The easiest way is the Claude directory.

Add to Claude

Then select Connect, sign in with the code we email you and select Allow.

Or add it by link

The link is the address of AskGenealogy. Your assistant uses it to reach your trees.

  1. Open Customize, then Connectors.
  2. Select Add, then Add custom connector.
  3. Name it AskGenealogy, paste the link and select Add.
  4. Select Connect. A sign-in window opens.
  5. Enter your email. We send a 6-digit code. Type it in. The first sign-in creates your account.
  6. Select Allow. The window closes and the connector is on.

ChatGPT adds a connector by link. Copy the link below, then follow the steps.

ChatGPT calls a connector an “MCP server”. MCP is the standard way for an assistant to use an outside tool.

  1. Open Plugins, select +, then choose Add custom MCP server.
  2. Name it AskGenealogy and paste the link.
  3. Save. A sign-in window opens.
  4. Enter your email. We send a 6-digit code. Type it in. The first sign-in creates your account.
  5. Select Allow. The window closes and the connector is on.

Ask your tree is a chat on this site, for people without Claude or ChatGPT. It opens soon. Until then, use Claude or ChatGPT.

2. Check that it works

Start a new chat, make sure the connector is on, and send this message.

What research projects do I have?

If the assistant answers, you are connected. A new account has no projects yet, so the answer may say so.

3. Start your first project

Tell the assistant who you are researching. A family tree file (GEDCOM) is optional.

  1. In the chat, say who to research, for example: Start a research project about my great-grandfather Giuseppe Rossi, born near Treviso around 1870.
  2. The assistant creates the project and saves each search and source in its log.
  3. Have a family tree file? Ask: Help me upload a GEDCOM file. The assistant sends a link to this site. Open it and sign in with the same email.
  4. On the page that opens, choose your file or drop it there. The upload starts by itself. Wait until the tree is ready.
  5. Go back to the chat and keep researching, for example: Who are the oldest ancestors in my tree?

Not working?

I do not see Add custom connector

Custom connectors are not on every plan or workspace. Check your plan, or ask the admin of your workspace to allow them.

The code email does not arrive

Wait a minute, check the spam folder, then ask for a new code. Use the same email every time.

The assistant does not use the tools

Open a new chat and turn the AskGenealogy connector on for it. Then send the message from step 2 again.
